審査方法
審査員はベルギー在住のイラストレーターSteven Van Hasten氏、イラン在住のグラフィツクデザイナー兼イラストレーターAmir Alaei氏、リトアニア在住のグラフィツクデザイナー兼イラストレーターLaimutė Varkalaitė氏、ベトナム生まれ、アメリカ在住のイラストレーター兼美術家のTran Nguyen氏、日本イラストレーター協会会長蟹江隆広氏の計5名で構成しました。
各審査員に対して持ち点が与えられ、最もいいと思う作家1名に対して10ポイント、次にいいと思う作家2名に8ポイント、特に優れていると思う作家5名に6ポイント、優れていると思う作家9名に4ポイント、15名に2ポイント、20名に1ポイントを入れてもらいました。
5名の審査員が入れたポイントを合計して、獲得したポイント数が多い作家の順に各賞の受賞者を決めました。
中国で展示会を開催していただくAt Design Co., LtdのCEO兼クリエイティブディレクターのTe Li氏は審査員として参加していただきました。世界中から優秀なイラストレーターを発掘し、作家と作品をもっと広くプロモーションしていくことを目的として、今年度新たに特別賞を設定し、賞金10万円を授与します。

It is a great honor to be the judge for JIA Illustration Award 2022.
First of all, congratulations to this year's winning illustrators.
It means a lot to me that Japan Illustrators’ Association provides such an opportunity for illustrators from around the world to shine in this international award.
This year's winning works will be exhibited in China, which I hope can lead JIA Illustration Award to become an even more influential award globally.
As the organizer of the China exhibition, I want to help provide a platform for the award winners to display their winning works and help every illustrator to become the best creative version of themselves.
Steven Van Hasten (Illustrator in Belgium)
It was a great honor to be asked to be a jury member for this prestigious competition.
It was an exciting experience to see all the entries from all over the world and it was especially challenging to be able to give my humble opinion.
It was not easy to compare all those talented illustrators against each other and to make a choice between them.
All those different angles, styles, nationalities and cultures made it an intense but very interesting quest.
I want to congratulate all illustrators, even those who didn't win, it depends on so many factors whether you win or not and sometimes the difference is so minimal.
That's why I want to urge all illustrators to keep creating and to keep making the world more beautiful with their exciting work.
I would also like to thank the JIA and in particular Mr. Takahiro Kanie for all the efforts they have put in over the years to give illustrators from all over the world the chance to get a little extra spotlight.

I am very honored to have been given the opportunity to participate as a judge in this biennial.
In my opinion, this is a great opportunity for any illustrator from anywhere in the world to showcase their art and talent.
In addition, it was a good opportunity for me to get acquainted with original art and different talents, and new artists.

Laimutė Varkalaitė (Illustrator & Graphic designer in Lithuania)
Illustration – it is a unique form of depiction of our life.
No matter how realistic or stylized it is, it always reveals the world of its author.
And this aspect is the most valuable thing in illustration.
That's why each illustration has its distinctive story which might be discovered by a perceiver in many individual ways.
I call illustration an illustrator's map.
And it always finds its explorer, as it should be.
It is a big honor for me to be one of the judges of the JIA'2022 contest.
It was a really wonderful visual journey to my eyes and heart!
I had an unforgettable time and it was a big pleasure to look at all those illustrations closer and find many interesting details in each work and to find out what the author wanted to convey by lines, shapes and colours.

As an illustrator, it's a privilege to be part of the judging panel for this year's JIA competition.
The works submitted were original in style and striking to the eye.
Because of the high caliber of art presented, it was difficult to choose between artists, particularly for the award winners.
I enjoyed the array of styles, unique approach to problem-solving, and compositions.
Getting to see the behind-the-scenes and viewing the exceptional pieces was a treat for me.
Everyone who submitted work should be extremely proud of themselves, whether you received an award or not.

世界各国からたくさんご応募いただき、応募者数343名、作品数846点となりました。
38ヵ国から応募がありましたが、国別の応募者数は以下の通りです。
日本107名、中国110名、台湾43名、アメリカ16名、香港11名、ポーランド4名、クゥエート４名、イギリス3名、メキシコ3名、ドイツ3名、タイ2名、マレーシア2名、スペイン2名、フィリピン2名、インド2名、フィンランド2名、ロシア2名、韓国、リトアニア、オランダ、オーストラリア、ポルトガル、ブラジル、モーリシャス、ポルスカ、イスラエル、ウクライナ、コスタリカ、ブルガリア、ラトビア、クロアチア、イラン、カナダ、フランス、ジブラルタル、マカオ、イタリア、セネガル、各1名づつ。
今回はAt Design Co., Ltdが中国で受賞作品の展示会を開催していただくことになり、特に中国からの応募が目立って増えました。
審査にあたり重要視したことはファーストインプレッション、これはコンペでとても大切なことです。審査員は一度にたくさんの作品を見ますので、ファーストインプレッションが弱いと印象に残りません。見た瞬間に心が動くかどうかです。ではどんな作品に心を動かされるかというと、まずはオリジナリティーがあり、自分の世界観を確立している作品です。
1点だけ出品だと、たまたまその1点だけがいいという可能性もありますので、選ぶのに躊躇します。それにどちらか選ぶ時に片方は1点のみの出品、もう一方は6点の出品だとしたら高確率で6点の方が選ばれます。これは私だけでなく、他の審査員も同様だと思います。多数の作品からは圧倒的な熱量を感じます。ただし条件があり、どの作品も作風とレベルが統一されていること。
作品ごとに作風が違っていたり、レベルの差がある場合は、むしろマイナスに働く場合があります。
出品作品の増加とともに、全体のレベルがどんどん上がっている印象を受けます。数年前だったら、受賞できたレベルの作品でも入賞が難しくなってきていると感じます。このコンペで受賞された皆さんは間違いなく一流のイラストレーター、または一流のアーティストになるべき人たちだと感じています。このような才能のあるアーティストを世界中の人たちに知っていただくことが私たちの使命です。

Founder and Creative Director at At Design Co., Ltd.
As a business consultant, I work with designers in various fields to complete projects in Japan and overseas.
I also plan exhibitions as a Creative Director, build the “At Design Talks” platform, and cooperate with over hundreds of artists, illustrators, and designers to share creative contents.

Steven Van Hasten lives and illustrates in Ghent, a historic, vibrant city in Belgium.
He was not born there but has been making the neighborhood unsafe for 30 years after he had stayed there after studying Design and Illustration at Sint-Lucas, school of arts.
He illustrates children's books, magazines, for companies and much more.
His illustrations take you on a journey through a landscape in which a lot is hidden, a wink, a visual joke or a critical reference to society.
His illustrations are never a literal representation of the story or of what needs to be portrayed.
They have their own context, provide more information about the subject and add things to it.
Social criticism is often incorporated in small references.
His work has been internationally recognized by Northern festival of Illustration, 3x3 Magazine, JIA, Society of illustrators LA, Applied Arts Magazine, AOI…

Amir Alaei (Illustrator & Graphic designer in Iran)
My name is Amir Alaei.
I started to work as a freelance illustrator & Graphic designer in 2005 by illustrating small stories for children in magazines in Iran.
Since then I illustrated more than 25 books for children, worked for several publishers, and in this way, my artworks were accepted for different festivals and biennales around the world.
Skilled in Book Design, Graphic Design, Book Illustration, and Art Direction with a Bachelor of Arts - BA focused in Graphic Design from the Semnan University of Art.
I specialize in using Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and UI designer and More than 15 years of graphics design experience in the printing and packaging field, Branding, Identity & Logo Design, Web and media graphics, Interested in Digital Marketing and Social Media.
I have designed projects from concept through production to final delivery, ensuring that all my work is created to suit the needs of the client and the user.

Laimutė Varkalaitė (Illustrator & Graphic designer in Lithuania)
A few words about me. I am Laimutė Varkalaitė, an illustrator and a graphic designer, based in a sweet small home-town Rumšiškės, in Lithuania.
I decided to stay in this place a long time ago.
My home and the environment which I live in are the base of everything I create.
That inspires me to discover simplicity and the sense of wonder in my creative ideas.
I love drawing.
This is a language I use to introduce myself and connect with other people.
The main theme of most of my works is nature and human-being, their interaction and reflection of each other.
With my creation I try to achieve a calming and positive impact on the perceiver.
I want to inspire him to believe in the magical effect of creation, to encourage him to reveal his worldview and to get to know himself better.

Tran Nguyen （Illustrator & fine artist in USA）
Tran Nguyen is an award-winning illustrator & fine artist.
Born in Can Tho, Vietnam, she currently resides in Georgia, U.S.
Nguyen's paintings are created with a soft, delicate quality using colored pencil and acrylic on paper.
She’s most known for her paintings of whimsical women and their melancholic landscapes, which often possess an air of fantasy and surrealism.
She creates illustrations for published media such as magazines, books, wine & beer packaging, animation, advertising, and mural work.
Her clients include Wizards of the Coast, Tiger Beer, World Wildlife Fund, and she has showcased with galleries across the world.
