IN THE BOOK OF GENESIS, the Tower of Babel was a soaring tower built by mankind.
After humanity’s language was divided, the construction of the Tower of Babel was abandoned halfway.
The language you hear has always been determined by where you are, but there are always idealists looking to rebuild the Tower of Babel and convince people to abandon their narrow-mindedness and listen to one another.
Sound artist and independent music producer Li Xingyu is one of those idealists.
He has traveled around the world, collecting sounds from nature, folk customs and day-to-day life.
He puts them all in his “52 hertz Sound Pavilion” — a virtual space where his recordings are collected.
There, all sounds have the right to be heard equally.
Li Xingyu hopes that by listening to sounds from across the world, people can exercise their imagination, move past their confusion and learn to become good listeners.
In this article, we have recreated four of the soundscapes that Li Xingyu visited.
Scan the QR code below to follow our official WeChat account, input the keyword “audio tower of babel” and follow the instructions to listen along.
You will hear a real recording that will tell you a true story of sound.
